Peter Thiel’s hedge fund Thiel Macro LLC sold its stake in Nvidia Corp. during the third quarter, marking yet another retreat from investments in the world’s leading provider of artificial intelligence chips.
The fund offloaded its entire position of 537,742 shares in the Santa Clara, California-based chipmaker — a holding that would have been worth about $100 million based on the closing price from Sept. 30. The Thiel Macro fund now counts Apple Inc., Microsoft Corp. and a reduced stake in Tesla Inc. as its main bets, according to a 13F filing.
Thiel’s move comes at a time of rising concerns about the AI exuberance that turned Nvidia into the world’s most valuable company. Hedge fund manager Michael Burry has emerged as perhaps the highest-profile critic, disclosing bearish wagers against both Nvidia and AI-powered software developer Palantir Technologies Inc. A series of circular, multibillion-dollar deals between AI chipmakers, startups, data center operators and others across the tech ecosystem have further stoked concerns that the industry is propping up itself.
Japan’s SoftBank Group Corp. announced it sold off its shares in Nvidia in October for $5.83 billion, largely to help finance other AI investments. Thiel has been less bullish on AI development than SoftBank founder Masayoshi Son, but both men opted to exit their holdings around the time that Nvidia became the first company to breach a $5 trillion valuation.
Nvidia’s shares, which have gained about 1% since the end of September, declined as much as 3% in New York on Monday. An analysis of 13F filings from 909 hedge funds found an even split of investor sentiment on the chipmaker: 161 increased their investment positions in Nvidia, while 160 decreased them during the three months to September.
Opinions remain divided about the prospects for AI companies, which continue to raise and spend funds at elevated rates but have yet to demonstrate monetization models that would pay off the lofty investments.
A representative for Peter Thiel declined to comment.
The billionaire’s venture firm, Founders Fund, also has invested in OpenAI, the maker of ChatGPT. It last backed the startup in March 2025 when OpenAI was valued at $300 million, according to data provider PitchBook.
His other bets include a US-based startup named Substrate, which aspires to compete in AI semiconductor production, as well as AI businesses Mercor and Cognition AI.
Burry’s Scion Asset Management disclosed this month that it had bought put options on Nvidia and Palantir, positions that would benefit from declines in the stock prices. Burry, who rose to fame for his 2008 bet against the US housing market, also posted a cryptic message on X: “sometimes, we see bubbles.”
Burry later took issue with the accounting practices of hyperscalers — the companies that buy Nvidia chips — including Microsoft Corp. and Alphabet Inc. He pointed out that they have extended depreciation schedules for their investments in recent years, helping cut expenses and boost profits.

‘Holy Sh*t!’: Shawn Ryan Aghast As Charlie Kirk’s Security Leader Reads Texts He Allegedly Sent University Police
‘What else am I to do when a command level person from an accredited police department says, ‘I’ve got this area.’?”
The person in charge of the security detail for Turning Point USA (TPUSA) founder Charlie Kirk says he warned Utah Valley University (UVU) police about access to a rooftop days before Kirk’s assassination, shocking podcaster Shawn Ryan on Monday.
Kirk was assassinated during a TPUSA event at UVU on Sept. 10, during which he was debating attendees. Brian Harpole of Integrity Security Solutions read Ryan texts during the episode of “The Shawn Ryan Show” of him allegedly flagging for UVU’s police chief the rooftop used by Kirk’s alleged assassin on Sept. 8, two days before the assassination.
“We have some correspondence with the chief of the school uh on that day, on Monday, before Charlie was killed and why this hadn’t come out and why he won’t stand up like a man and admit this, I don’t know, but he’s watching a bunch of men lose their careers and he’s okay with it,” Harpole told Ryan. “On Monday before, this correspondence went to Chief Long. ‘Hello, Chief Long. We received this message today from the student group. ‘There is a student roof access pretty close to where CK will be set up at the Utah Valley. (The Sorenson Center has a couple of staircases that go up to walkways on the roofs.)’”
“He comes back and the so, for edification, the Sorenson Center was the building in front of the Losee Center and so, he comes back he says you want uh access to the roof and came back and said I was told students have access above us,” Harpole continued. “If this is true it would be nice to either have it controlled access or allow one of my guys to be there as well if possible. He comes back and his last correspondence was, ‘I got you covered.’ What else am I to do when a command level person from an accredited police department says, ‘I’ve got this area.’?”
