“Today’s criminal charges against Yunqing Jian and Zunyong Liu highlight CBP’s critical role in protecting the American people from biological threats that could devastate our agricultural economy and cause harm to humans.”
Federal authorities in Detroit on Tuesday announced charges against a Chinese scholar at the University of Michigan and her boyfriend, a scientific researcher, for allegedly conspiring to smuggle a dangerous biological pathogen into the U.S.—a pathogen capable of damaging agricultural crops and causing illness in humans and livestock.
University of Michigan scholar Yunqing Jian, 33, and her boyfriend, Zunyong Liu, 34, both Chinese citizens, were charged in a criminal complaint with conspiracy, smuggling goods into the U.S., making false statements, and visa fraud, interim Detroit U.S. Attorney Jerome F. Gorgon Jr. announced.
According to the criminal complaint, Jian received Chinese government funding to work on the dangerous pathogen in China. A pathogen is a microorganism or biological agent that can cause disease or illness.
In this case, the pathogen is a fungus called Fusarium graminearum, which can cause “head blight,” a disease that affects wheat, barley, maize, and rice. It is responsible for billions of dollars in economic losses worldwide each year, according to a press release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office. The toxins produced by Fusarium graminearum can also cause vomiting, liver damage, and reproductive defects in humans and livestock.
The criminal complaint alleges that Jian’s boyfriend, Liu, works at a Chinese university where he conducts research on the same pathogen. Authorities allege that he initially lied but later admitted to smuggling Fusarium graminearum into the U.S. through Detroit Metropolitan Airport on July 27, 2024, with the intent of conducting research on it at the University of Michigan laboratory where Jian had been working since 2023.
An FBI affidavit filed Tuesday stated that Liu was interviewed at the airport by Customs and Border Patrol agents, and eventually admitted materials found in his backpack were different strains of the pathogen Fusarium graminearum. He also admitted that he intended to use the U-M lab to conduct research with the biological materials found in his backpack.
He initially told authorities that he had come to Michigan to visit his girlfriend.
“After LIU’s smuggling of the biological pathogen, FBI Agents interviewed Jian who falsely claimed that she knew nothing about Liu’s smuggling or his intent to conduct research on the pathogen at the laboratory during his visit,” according to the FBI affidavit.
“In fact, an examination of electronic communications between Liu and Jian shows that the two discussed the shipping of biological materials and research being done in the laboratory prior to Lius’s arrival,” the affidavit said. “Electronic evidence also shows that Jian has been involved in smuggling packages of biological material into the United States on prior occasions.”
A brief bio of Jian on a University of Michigan website titled “Molecular Plant-Microbe Interaction Working Groups” states:
Yunqing Jian is from Sichuan, China. She received her Ph.D. at Zhejiang University in 2020 and completed a two-year postdoctoral fellowship there. During her Ph.D. training, she studied the mechanisms by which fungi combat plant-derived stresses. She joined our lab in August 2022 as a postdoc, and her research mainly focuses on the evolutionary perspective of RLKs and their ligands.
“The alleged actions of these Chinese nationals—including a loyal member of the Chinese Communist Party—are of the gravest national security concerns,” said U.S. Attorney Gorgon in a statement. “These two aliens have been charged with smuggling a fungus that has been described as a ‘potential agroterrorism weapon’ into the heartland of America, where they apparently intended to use a University of Michigan laboratory to further their scheme.”
U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Director of Field Operations Marty C. Raybon said in a statement:
“Today’s criminal charges against Yunqing Jian and Zunyong Liu highlight CBP’s critical role in protecting the American people from biological threats that could devastate our agricultural economy and cause harm to humans—especially when it involves a researcher from a major university attempting to clandestinely bring potentially harmful biological materials into the United States.”

We Don’t Need To Welcome In People Who Hate Us
Yesterday in Boulder, Colorado, a perpetrator sprayed a flammable liquid on a group of mostly elderly Jews protesting the continued holding of hostages in Gaza. Then he threw Molotov cocktails to set several of the demonstrators on fire. The New York Post reports here that 8 were injured, ranging in age from 52 to 88 years old. Police arrested a man named named Mohamed Sabry Soliman, who was caught on video committing the acts. Oh, and also shouting slogans, including “They are killers! How many children you killed?” and “End Zionists.”
It quickly emerged that Soliman was an Egyptian illegally in the country. He had originally entered legally in 2022 on a tourist visa, but then overstayed. In 2023 he was granted a permit to work in the U.S. by the Biden administration. That expired in March 2025, after which he stayed on illegally.
Which raises the question, why was Soliman in the country in the first place, or granted permission to stay and work, or not thrown out when the permission expired? Whatever you might think about the illegal immigration situation, why on earth do we welcome into the country people who hate us? Did anybody vet this guy, even a little?
Add Soliman to a long list of Middle Easterners in the U.S. at the grace of the government who make no secret of their hatred of the U.S. and of Israel. And who are only too happy to lead groups in acts of trespass, vandalism, and violence. To refresh you on some of the names and roles, here is a May 15 piece from Al-Jazeera with a brief list of some of the most prominent:
Mohsen Mahdawi, Rumeysa Ozturk, Mahmoud Khalil and Badar Khan Suri are among the students targeted by US President Donald Trump.
These four are all student leaders of pro-Hamas, anti-Israel, and pro-BDS movements at elite university campuses — Mahdawi and Khalil at Columbia, Ozturk at Tufts, and Suri at Georgetown.
Consider Khalil. Al-Jazeera identifies him as the “lead negotiator” for the group called Columbia University Apartheid Divest. Isn’t “lead negotiator” the same thing as head of the group? Looking around, I can’t find the name of anyone else owning up to being the leader of this group, and it looks to me like calling himself “lead negotiator” is a thinly-veiled way to preserve some kind of argument that he can avoid responsibility for acts of violence and vandalism carried out by the group.
What has CUAD been up to this past year or so? Read articles about the mayhem at Columbia since the October 7, 2023 Hamas massacres, and you find CUAD intimately involved in all of it. For example, there was the statement put out by CUAD on the one-year anniversary of the massacre, as reported in the New York Times of October 9, 2024:
“We support liberation by any means necessary, including armed resistance,” the group, Columbia University Apartheid Divest . . . . The group marked the anniversary of the Oct. 7 attack on Israel by distributing a newspaper with a headline that used Hamas’s name for it: “One Year Since Al-Aqsa Flood, Revolution Until Victory,” it read, over a picture of Hamas fighters breaching the security fence to Israel. And the group posted an essay calling the attack a “moral, military and political victory” and quoting Ismail Haniyeh, the assassinated former political leader of Hamas.
In January 2025, as reported here in the Columbia Spectator, a Columbia building called Kravis Hall, housing the business school, was vandalized by protesters pouring a cement-like substance down multiple toilets all over the building. Somebody just happened to record an anonymous video of the vandalism, which then got posted on the Instagram accounts of CUAD and another group called New York City resists. Text accompanying the Instagram post described the vandalism as some kind of righteous response to actions of the Israeli military in Gaza.
Or, just a few weeks ago, in early May, protesters occupied Columbia’s main library in the middle of exam time. Here is a May 8 report in Time Magazine. Excerpt:
A Substack post that appeared to be from Columbia University Apartheid Divest, a coalition of student groups supporting the Palestinian cause, said the protesters “renamed” the library the “Basel Al-Araj Popular University” after a Palestinian activist and writer who died in 2017. “The flood shows that as long as Columbia funds and profits from imperialist violence, the people will continue to disrupt Columbia’s profits and legitimacy,” the Substack post added, also reiterating calls for the University to divest from companies with business links to Israel.
Time reports that several Columbia public safety officers were injured attempting to restore order.
These are just examples of numerous disruptive and violent activities at Columbia in which CUAD appears to be intimately involved.
According to the Al-Jazeera piece, Mr. Khalil was granted a green card at some point. I can’t imagine why. Now that the Trump administration is seeking to revoke that and deport Mr. Khalil, his attorneys are spinning the situation as an issue of “free speech.”
I disagree. American citizens are completely entitled to express views that are anti-Israel, anti-semitic, and pro-Hamas (short of the First Amendment limit, which is something like immediate incitement to violence). They are entitled to hate the United States, and to say so. But there is no reason that we must be required to invite foreigners and aliens who express such views into the United States.
The individuals listed in the Al-Jazeera article are people who are here on visas, and who have expressed their hatred of the United States, and whom the Trump administration now wants to deport. Multiple judges have stayed the deportations, at least until the cases are fully heard. Ultimately, I don’t think this is a close issue. The United States is under no obligation to welcome into the country people who hate us. It is high time that applicants for visas of any type get thoroughly vetted for anti-U.S. views.

WAYNE ROOT: The Signs are There. Is China Planning a Massive Drone Attack Inside the US Homeland? Are We Prepared?
The Deep State and our foreign enemies will stop at nothing to ruin President Trump’s second term.
The signs are all around us.
First, Fed Chief and Deep State lackey Jerome Powell refuses to cut interest rates, and when the Fed does finally act, it will be purposely too little, too late. They are trying to ruin Trump’s economy before the midterms.
Second, evil Deep State puppet master Bill Gates won’t stop talking about a new pandemic heading our way any minute. Does he know something we don’t? Gates is a globalist who hates Trump. His buddies in Big Pharma hate Trump and RFK Jr. And of course, China hates Trump. They know Trump is the only thing standing in their way of world domination.
Add it all up. Another pandemic kills our economy, benefits China, and produces hundreds of billions of dollars in profits for Big Pharma. It’s good for everyone- except Trump and the American people. What does the Deep State have up their sleeve?
Third, we come to Ukraine.
President Zelensky and his buddies in the Ukrainian mafia have stolen billions of dollars of our war funding. And of course, Democrats have laundered whatever money is left to fund Democrat campaigns inside the USA.
How do you think an incompetent, unpopular loser like Kamala raised a record $1.3 billion?
Zelensky and his merry band of Deep State scammers are using the war with Russia as their own personal cash cow. War is good for business! If the war accelerates and expands, everyone gets filthy rich. If it ends, the jig is up, and the money train ends.
That’s precisely why Zelensky hit deep inside Russia with the biggest and deadliest drone attack in history. He produced a modern day “Pearl Harbor” for Russia. One cheap drone attack costing a few thousand dollars destroyed $7 billion dollars of Russian nuclear bombers. The point of massive attack? To force Putin’s hand. To motivate Putin to nuke Ukraine. To get NATO and America instantly embroiled in WW3.
What does that accomplish? Trump’s second term will be dominated by world war. Trump and Congress are distracted and overwhelmed by WW3. The entire Trump agenda to clean up the Deep State goes by the wayside. And the war machine and funding for war goes into overdrive. The Deep State gets filthy rich.
Finally, here’s the one threat that keeps me up at night.
Is China planning a major attack inside the US homeland? Perhaps a drone attack just like Ukraine pulled off against big, bad, world power Russia?
Was the “Pearl Harbor” surprise attack by Ukraine a dry run for what China is planning inside the USA?
How did Ukraine pull it off? They drove the drones on the back of 18-wheeler semi-trailers deep inside Russia. They parked the trucks right nearby Russian military bases. Then they launched the killer drones from right outside the bases. There was no time for Russia’s military to respond or defend. It was the perfect attack. In a matter of seconds most of Russia’s bomber fleet were destroyed. And $7 billion was up in smoke.
I believe this is exactly what China is planning for an attack inside the USA. Except much bigger and bolder.
The signs are all there. First Biden (and his boss Obama) left the back door to America open for China. They opened the borders and welcomed in 20 million illegal aliens with no questions asked. Included among those millions of bad guys were at least 200,000 Chinese military-age males.
Why are they here? It’s an 8000-mile journey. How did they get from China to America? How did they get out of China without the consent of the Chinese government? Who funded their journey and why?
This was clearly a CCP operation approved at the highest levels of the Chinese communist government.
But that’s only a small piece of the puzzle.
Now add in Chinese spy balloons allowed to fly over US military bases multiple times, for many days, with no response by the Biden administration. That was TREASON.
These were clearly surveillance balloons sent by the Chinese military to spy on our military bases. The Chinese already know exactly what is inside each U.S. base, what our capabilities and vulnerabilities are, and where to attack.
Now add in another piece of the puzzle. China has purchased thousands of acres of farmland next door to US military bases. Why do you think they did that? Could this serve as launching pads for drone attacks right next to our military bases- a copycat of the Ukraine drone attack?
Put it all together. We’ve let the wolves into the chicken coop. Chinese military and terrorists are already in large numbers inside our country. They own the land next to our bases. Their spy balloons have mapped out exactly where to attack.
And last but not least, I am betting that China owns the Democrat “resistance judges” who constantly block Trump from deporting illegal alien criminals and terrorists inside our country- which includes these hundreds of thousands of Chinese military-age males.
It’s the perfect storm.
I’ll bet you the plan is in place right now- ready to launch the minute China begins the invasion of Taiwan. And the sophisticated plan will involve drone attacks on our military bases; terrorist attacks on our infrastructure; cyber-attacks on our banks and electric grid to take down our economy; and a new deadly pandemic unleashed on America at the same time.
The signs are all there. The Deep State and our foreign enemies want to stop President Trump from succeeding at all costs.
The question is, are we prepared?
