President Trump late in the day Friday issued a lengthy, and absolutely bombshell and historic (if true) Greenland-related post on Truth Social, after a long relative silence on what was early on a core priority of his administration.
He has announced that United States has entered into a security agreement with Denmark and Greenland to control the resource rich autonomous territory claimed by Denmark – though at this early stage (and it being night time in Europe) it is anything but clear whether there’s actually confirmation and agreement to this on the European side of things.
The agreement would grant the United States“permanent control over security, and all other needs, in Greenland,“ Trump wrote. He characterized the agreement as adequately addressing longtime White House concerns. But this sounds like it could be sovereignty move, or the creeping beginnings of it.
“At my direction, we worked with representatives of Denmark and Greenland to guarantee that the United States will FOREVER have the complete ability to do what is necessary in Greenland in order to secure and defend the security of Greenland, and the United States of America,” the president’s post states.

President Donald Trump has taken a ‘permanent’ stake in Greenland with a new security deal that will enable the US to exclusively establish new military bases on the strategic Arctic island.
Beyond Pituffik Space Base, an established outpost that enables US early warning systems, the US will be allowed to open new sites across the hostile landscape.
The deal Trump signed with Danish leaders on Tuesday also bars other nations, most notably Russia and China, from establishing military bases on Greenland, two nations that similarly harbor Arctic ambitions.
The deal serves as a sort of consolation prize for Trump, who has long expressed his desire to acquire the island either by purchasing, annexing it or taking it by force with the US military.
Greenland, a semi-autonomous territory of Denmark, holds incredible strategic importance to the US. Located in the North Atlantic, the island sits at a critical chokepoint where Russian and Chinese vessels have increasingly been spotted.
Danish PM Mette Frederiksen and Greenland’s PM Jens-Frederik Nielsen both attended the signing ceremony with Trump.
‘So this is tremendous for Europe and for the United States, for everybody, and for Greenland,’ the president said, adding it will be a ‘long-term, fantastic relationship.’
Nielsen told Trump after the signing: ‘Our security is your security.’
