Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and Senate Democrats have used the filibuster to block the House-passed bipartisan spending bill 14 times. How is the Democrat Senate minority able to impose this kind of legislative gridlock over the majority Senate Republicans?
“Filibustering includes any use of dilatory or obstructive tactics to block a measure by preventing it from coming to a vote. The possibility of filibusters exists because Senate rules place few limits on Senators’ rights and opportunities in the legislative process,” a special report from Congress.gov on the history of filibustering explains.
President Donald Trump has been strongly urging the Senate to terminate the filibuster and get government open again.
Former White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany on The Five this week told Republicans it was time to “nuke the filibuster” for spending bills, the Daily Caller reported. “Let me propose a very simple solution here. Filibuster, not in the Constitution. Filibuster, not passed legislatively. Filibuster can be removed for the sole purpose of spending bills. You can just remove the filibuster to open the government,” McEnany said. “When military members are hurting, when we are not safe in the skies, it is time to nuke the filibuster for spending bills because Democrats are hurting our country.”
She’s just proposing doing this for spending bills, which is one option.
If the Senate terminates the Filibuster in total, they can codify President Trump’s Executive Orders into laws, and do it with majority votes.
They can open the government, pass a nationwide voter ID law. They can pass a law restoring voting day where Americans show up in person to cast one man-one ballot on Election Day.
They can scrap Obamacare.
In a post on Truth Social, President Trump explained why the filibuster needs to be nuked:
The Democrats are far more likely to win the Midterms, and the next Presidential Election, if we don’t do the Termination of the Filibuster (The Nuclear Option!), because it will be impossible for Republicans to get Common Sense Policies done with these Crazed Democrat Lunatics being able to block everything by withholding their votes. FOR THREE YEARS, NOTHING WILL BE PASSED, AND REPUBLICANS WILL BE BLAMED. Elections, including the Midterms, will be rightfully brutal. If we do terminate the Filibuster, we will get EVERYTHING approved, like no Congress in History. We will have FAIR, FREE, and SAFE Elections, No Men in Women’s Sports or Transgender for Everybody, Strong Borders, Major Tax and Energy Cuts, and will secure our Second Amendment, which the Democrats will also terminate, IMMEDIATELY. If we don’t do it, they are far more likely to do well in the upcoming Elections, which would mean a PACKED Supreme Court, 2 more States and 4 more Democrat Senators (D.C. and Puerto Rico), and 8 more Electoral Votes. Voter ID could turn California red again, or at least purple, and may spell the end of the cheating Democrat Party.
Republicans could reopen the government by voting to end the 60-vote rule, but many GOP senators refuse to support eliminating the filibuster. Many are weary of scraping the filibuster, warning it can be used against them if/when Democrats retake the Senate.
House Speaker Mike Johnson said “The filibuster has traditionally been viewed as a very important safeguard. If the shoe was on the other foot, I don’t think our team would like it.”
Mila Joy named the Republicans who oppose ending the filibuster on X, and she didn’t pull any punches:

Supreme Court Issues Emergency Order Temporarily Blocking Full SNAP Payments
The Supreme Court has issued an emergency order blocking SNAP funding amid the ongoing Schumer Shutdown.
Here’s more from the Associated Press:
The Supreme Court on Friday granted the Trump administration’s emergency appeal to temporarily block a court order to fully fund SNAP food aid payments amid the government shutdown, even though residents in some states already have received the funds.
A judge had given the Republican administration until Friday to make the payments through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. But the administration asked an appeals court to suspend any court orders requiring it to spend more money than is available in a contingency fund, and instead allow it to continue with planned partial SNAP payments for the month.
Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson issued the ruling, putting a temporary stay on an earlier order issued by a Rhode Island judge that required the Trump administration to disburse the full SNAP payment amount in the month of November.
SNAP funding ran out on November 1 after Democrats refused to reopen the government, despite a ruling from two judges on October 31 that ordered the Trump administration to use emergency contingency funds to pay SNAP benefits. The White House maintained it didn’t have the legal authority to access those funds as they were for emergency purposes only. On November 3, the Trump administration said it would issue partial SNAP payments.
On November 4, President Trump said the best way to return to full SNAP funding for the states was for Democrats to vote to reopen the government and pass a clean Continuing Resolution, writing on Truth Social, “SNAP BENEFITS, which increased by Billions and Billions of Dollars (MANY FOLD!) during Crooked Joe Biden’s disastrous term in office (Due to the fact that they were haphazardly “handed” to anyone for the asking, as opposed to just those in need, which is the purpose of SNAP!), will be given only when the Radical Left Democrats open up government, which they can easily do, and not before! Thank you for your attention to this matter. President DJT.”
Democrats were angry with the administration’s appeal to the Supreme Court. Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) wrote on X, “Trump will do everything but feed families in need.”
According to the Associated Press, Brown Jackson’s order will remain in place for 48 hours after the appeals court rules to give the Trump administration “time to return to the Supreme Court if the appeals court refuses to step in.”
Several states, including Wisconsin, Oregon, California, Kansas, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Washington, and Hawaii, issued SNAP payments on Friday. Other states are still waiting for federal guidance.

Donald Trump’s dramatic, four-word salvo on Truth Social just before midnight Tuesday means he knows the honeymoon is over.
After thumping wins by radical Democrats — a tautology now, of course — the battle lines are clear.
The president knows he has just one year until the midterms to fireproof his agenda and safeguard future elections against Democratic fraud.
That’s why he wants to end the filibuster.
The 60-vote Senate threshold is strangling Republican priorities and is allowing Democrats to shut down the government for the fifth week while blaming Trump.
Yet too many Senate Republicans don’t know what time it is.
They are clinging to outdated niceties that Democrats are itching to blow up as soon as they get their hands back on the reins — which will be soon if the GOP old guard doesn’t wake up.
Trump has always known what time it is, from the day he glided into history aboard his golden escalator and was targeted for destruction every which way for the last 10 years.
That’s why in every election they contested Tuesday, Democrats used Trump as their bogeyman.
One year ago, Trump scored crushing victories across the board, winning the Electoral College, the popular vote, the House, the Senate, and every swing state, and gaining ground in nearly every demographic and region.
America rejected Democrats’ menu, even after Dems jettisoned Joe Biden: the DEI liberal Kamala Harris and her running mate, the conservative-coded, gun-totin’ liberal dad Tim Walz.
Two new leftist flavors
But this time, Democrats offered two new flavors: a Muslim immigrant Communist for the big blue city and white liberal “national security moms” for the white-flight suburbs.
They had one thing in common: hating Donald Trump.
“Here in New Jersey, we know that this nation has not ever been, nor will it ever be, ruled by kings,” said Democratic Rep. Mikie Sherrill, a former federal prosecutor and Navy helicopter pilot, in her victory speech after winning the race for New Jersey governor.
Sherrill was the mirror image of Abigail Spanberger, the former CIA officer who won Virginia’s gubernatorial race and helped her AG running mate Jay Jones over the line, despite his fantasies of murdering a Republican rival and his children.
Their national security credentials, pleasant, middle-aged suburban-mom appearances, and moderate-sounding rhetoric reassured voters alarmed by rising crime and the Democratic embrace of sexual fetishes.
Of course both candidates, despite having daughters, are in favor of males in female changing rooms.
In Trump’s hometown, Zohran Mamdani pitched himself as the president’s worst nightmare.
It won him a squeak over 50% of the vote, despite his humble-brag admission that he is “far from the perfect candidate. I am young … I am Muslim. I am socialist. And most damning of all, I refuse to apologize for any of this.”
In his coldly triumphalist victory speech in Brooklyn’s Paramount Theater ballroom Tuesday night, Mamdani dropped his smiley mask and addressed Trump directly.
“Donald Trump, since I know you’re watching, I have four words for you: Turn the volume up,” he shouted, to the roaring delight of his supporters.
“New York will remain a city of immigrants, a city built by immigrants, powered by immigrants, and as of tonight, led by an immigrant.
