Republican Senator Ron Johnson was on “Sunday Morning Futures” with Maria Bartiromo to discuss getting rid of the filibuster to open the government and continue President Trump’s America First agenda. He explained that the Democrats would not hesitate to do the same if they were in charge.
“Do you expect that the Democrats are going to do it anyway, once they return to power?” Bartiromo asked about the filibuster.
“Democrats, we already know they absolutely will nuke the filibuster. They purged the two members who had prevented that last time,” Johnson said.
“If they gain power, they will nuke the filibuster to maintain power,” Johnson warned.
“They are keeping government shut because they don’t want the economy to do well,” Johnson continued.
“They will obstruct every good piece of legislation President Trump and Republicans want to pass, so we’d better act first,” Johnson said.
“We will use the 50-vote threshold for good things. To fully secure the border, to secure our elections,” Johnson said.
“Democrats will nuke the filibuster to maintain their power. It’s all about power with Democrats,” Johnson warned.
“Does John Thune, the leader, not expect the Democrats to nuke it when they return to power?” Bartiromo asked.
“I’ve got to believe every Republican believes they will do that,” Johnson said.
“I wish the Democrats respect the filibuster. It’s a good thing for the institution, but they don’t, so you have to recognize that reality,” Johnson said.
“If we want to do good things for the American public, we’d better end the filibuster on our watch,” Johnson continued.
Senator Johnson explained that if it went to a vote, it would show if Democrats really want to get rid of the filibuster, or only when it is convenient for their causes.
“Let’s see if Democrats are really serious, if they want to get rid of the filibuster with President Trump in office,” Johnson said.
“It would be very interesting. Are Democrats dedicated to nuking the filibuster when the other side is in power, or not?” Johnson explained.

What did Senate Democrats get out of the 40-day Schumer Shutdown? Nothing more than what they would have had with the clean continuing resolution.
Chuck Schumer’s caucus threw in the towel last night, with at least ten Democrats plegding to vote to end the filibuster on the CR. The Senate will replace that CR with new language that would extend government operations until the end of January while negotiations continue on the FY2026 budget. Forty days ago, Schumer demanded passage of an extension of expiring ObamaCare subsidies, plus repeals of Medicaid changes in the One Big Beautiful Bill that eliminated coverage for illegal aliens.
So what did Democrats end up getting for this biblical walk in the idiotic budget wilderness? A promise for a vote on the ACA subsidies, with no guarantee of GOP support:
“We may not have gotten everything we wanted”? Democrats didn’t get anything they wanted. They didn’t eveb get a pass on the filibuster for the debate on ACA subsidies, let alone a commitment for an extension. We’ll get back to that in a moment, but the only real concession in this deal from the GOP is a pledge to rescind the layoffs that Russ Vought began, and those only took place because Schumer shut the government down:
A handful of Senate Democrats on Sunday indicated they are ready to advance a package of bills that could end the government shutdown, multiple sources told Axios.
Why it matters: It is the most significant movement toward a bipartisan breakthrough in the talks to reopen the government in over a month.
- At least 10 Senate Democrats are poised to support a procedural motion to advance a package of spending bills and a short-term funding measure through the end of January, multiple sources from both parties told Axios.
- The deal includes a December vote on a Democratic proposal to extend ACA tax credits for one year, multiple sources said. It would take 60 votes to pass.
- It also includes language aimed at providing assistance to federal employees who were laid off during the shutdown, as well as a provision to fund SNAP benefits through Sept. 30.
The “provision” on SNAP is the Agriculture-FDA appropriation bill. That’s not a concession; it’s one of the dozen bills that would form the discretionary part of the federal budget. That bill and two others are ready for passage. Senate Majority Leader John Thune had already put them into a so-called minibus.
As for the “concession” on ACA, it’s not a concession at all. Donald Trump has expressed concern about the impact of the expiration of subsidies, which will hit ObamaCare customers like a tax hike five years after the pandemic for which the subsidies were implemented. Trump and the GOP want to restrict and reduce them, and the White House and Republicans on Capitol Hill planned to work on this regardless of what happened with the CR.
It may infuriate conservatives who warned about the political trap these “temporary” “emergency” subsidies created — because we were right.

Laura Ingraham Tells Senate Republican, ‘Y’all Gonna Get Wiped Out’ in the Midterms if GOP Keeps Filibuster
Fox News host Laura Ingraham urged Sen. Roger Marshall (R-KS) and other Senate Republicans to eliminate the filibuster, lest the GOP “get wiped out” in the next year’s midterm elections.
The federal government has been shut down since Oct. 1, after the Senate could not agree on a bill to keep the government funded beyond September. While the GOP controls the chamber 53-47, 60 votes are necessary to invoke cloture to break filibusters and advance legislation. In exchange for the requisite votes, Democrats are demanding that Republicans agree to extend healthcare premium subsidies under the Affordable Care Act, which are set to expire at the end of the year. Republicans have refused.
President Donald Trump has demanded that Senate Republicans eliminate the filibuster, which many senators regard as important to protect the Senate’s minority party.
On Friday’s episode of The Ingraham Angle, the host asked Marshall about the prospects for its elimination.
“Senator, Republicans – especially the more establishment Republicans – are very, very wedded to this idea of holding onto the filibuster with a death grip,” Ingraham said before alleging that if Democrats regain power, they will eliminate the rule. “Do you believe, given what this country and our people are facing, that it is time for the Republican Party to ditch the filibuster and start doing things for the American people?”
“Well, Laura, every day that this shutdown goes on, the more I’m convinced we need to end the filibuster,” Marshall replied. “And as I do my math here, the same Democrats that some of my colleagues are counting on to protect the filibuster are the same Democrats who are afraid to come across the aisle and open the government.”
Ingraham then warned that if Republicans’ agenda stalls in the Senate, the gridlock will bode poorly for Republicans’ electoral chances next year.
“The country is hurting. They want things done. You can’t ride on the ‘big beautiful bill’ into the midterms,” she said, referring to the massive legislation Trump signed in July. “Y’all gonna get wiped out. I’m telling you. The president sees it. He knows it. Tonight, will you commit to moving with your other senators toward ending the filibuster, Senator?”
“Well, Laura, I’m never gonna make a decision like that right now,” Marshall responded. “This is bigger than buying a house. I would never buy a house without making a decision, sleeping on it the next night.”
